“Straighten up and fly right” was a 1943 song by Nat King Cole, with lyrics by Irving Mills. The song was inspired by a folk tale known as “The Buzzard and the Monkey,” which Cole had learned from his father, Edward Coles, a Baptist minister in Alabama. Its message is that we should respect nature and all of the natural world.
It is also the title of an Arts & Faith storytelling session by Bobby Norfolk on Thursday, March 26, 1:00pm, at the Mirowitz Center at Covenant Place, 8 Millstone Campus Drive, St. Louis, MO 63146. The stories are on our theme this year, “Caring for Our Shared Home,” and remind us how we human beings are connected to all of God’s creation, all of nature. We share our journey around the sun with all living things.
St. Louis native Bobby Norfolk performs nationally and internationally. He was a National Park Ranger for ten years at the Gateway Arch, presenting living history programs. His CBS television show, Gator Tales, won three Emmy Awards, and he has eight published storytelling CDs, including many National Parent’s Choice God Awards. He has written several books for children and adults, and he is a member of the National Storytelling Network’s Circle of Excellence. In 2018, he received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Admission to the March 26 event is free, but we ask that you call 314-733-9813 to reserve seats.
